Featured Golf Trip: Casa de Campo

All-inclusive resorts offering tack-on golf are a dime a dozen. An all-inclusive that includes unlimited play? That’s a little tougher to find.

But that’s what awaits at ​Casa de Campo​, in La Romana, Dominican Republic, and the included golf is actually phenomenal. All three designs—two 18-holers and a 27—are from the legendary Pete Dye. All three are ​among the best​ in the Caribbean.

The Teeth of the Dog is the true headliner—rated ​Golf Digest‘s 54th-best​ course in the world. It features “seven dramatic holes that play tight enough to the ocean to get a player’s socks wet,” Golfweek ​writes​. And after the renovation from Jerry Pate—who once ​tossed​ Dye in the pond at TPC Sawgrass—it’s back to its original luster, with greens expanded and reshaped to reinstate original intent or create additional pin-placements. In addition to work on the greens, the updates ​included​ some touch-ups and additions to the course’s bunkering, plus better drainage, cart paths, and bouncier surfaces throughout.

Teeth of the Dog was a special place for its designer, who lived nearby for a time with his wife. Some of Dye’s ashes were spread on hole 8 after his death in 2020.

He didn’t skimp on creativity at the Dye Fore or Links courses, either. Those are the two included in the resort’s unlimited golf package (where as you’ll pay extra for the pleasure of playing Teeth of the Dog). ​Dye Fore​ plays alongside forested bluffs and the scenic Chavon River. The Links course, built second of the three in the 1970s, plays similar to what Dye “would shortly begin building up and down the east coast of Florida,” ​says​ Golf Digest, “with wide, flat fairways bending in S-shapes around hazards and terminating in steep, elevated greens.”

Casa de Campo offers a wide range of rooms and suites and villas, with the unlimited golf package starting at $699 per night. “I haven’t been going back there all these years just to play golf,” offers Pate. “I rarely play golf now. I go there because it’s one incredible experience.”
