Featured Golf Trip: Capitol Hill

The stop along Alabama’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail is good enough to warrant its own weekend.

We’ve already dug into the expansive, Alabama-wide Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at large, but let’s turn the magnifying glass on the value-packed offerings just outside the state capital.

Just eight miles from Montgomery in Prattville sits RTJ’s Capitol Hill and its appropriately named three golf courses—Judge, Legislator, Senator. The Judge is the true belle of the ball, but it comes with real attitude. Considered the best public course in the state by Golf Digest, the Judge demands you pull the big stick and hit it straight (how hard could that be?). It’s tipped out at more than 7,800 yards and water-guarded at every turn. But while it may kick you around, it does so amid stunning scenery—the first hole, for instance, drops some 100 feet from tee box to fairway before a challenging second shot along the Alabama River.

Meanwhile, the Legislator takes a more traditional route to its stature as another of the state’s best. It’s cut out of towering pines but offers more generous landing zones, and it plays around the swamp land. Finally, Senator is something different entirely, a links course inspired by Scottish golf, bolstering 140 pot bunkers, and playing in and around some serious mounds.

It’d be easy to try to bite off as much as you could possibly chew on a trip to the RTJ Trail. But in Capitol Hill, the state offers a contained golf experience that provides some real variety. And it can be had for a surprisingly low price. Packages run as low as $500 for three rounds and three nights at the Marriott overlooking the property.
