Truth be told, we haven’t stopped thinking about this place since it popped up in our weekly rundown of golf course news a few weeks back. So let’s dive into Boulders Resort & Spa, a winter-friendly stop tucked into the Sonoran Desert just north of Scottsdale.
It’s the landscaping and scenery that stick out most. A sprawling blend of ancient granite boulders sets the tone. Both the South and recently renovated North courses weave through these formations, with massive rock outcroppings sometimes sitting just a few yards off the green. Both designed by Jay Morrish, each course has its own personality: the North plays slightly longer and more forgiving, while the South feels tighter and more dramatic. Both utilize the terrain to perfection. And on both, the natural surrounds are evident—you’re liable to run into desert creatures like coyotes, bobcats, or roadrunners.

But it’s the overall experience of the resort that seems subject to the most acclaim. It’s a great spot to visit with a significant other, whether they golf or not. There’s a well-regarded spa and a Curio by Hilton that might as well be camouflaged into its surroundings, with accommodations that range from private villas to upscale casitas. You’ll likely enjoy the scenery off the course almost as much as on. You get the sense that the experience is more than the sum of its parts. This year, Golf Digest included Boulders as one of the best 75 golf resorts in America.
While its appropriately priced like a high-end resort, there are ways to get creative and bring down the cost. Packages start as low as $579 per person for a couple of nights and a couple of rounds. Of course, as one might imagine, prices fluctuate based on season. But all in all, if you’re looking to sneak in a golf weekend this winter, Boulders is well-worth the consideration.
