To Northern Michigan we go this week for a summertime retreat with wide golf variety.
At Boyne Highlands, you’ll find four 18-hole golf courses and a brand new par 3 track. It’s all tucked into the rolling hills of Michigan, at the base of the surrounding ski slopes. The Heather, a RTJ Sr. design, challenges golfers with water hazards and doglegs, while the Arthur Hills course offers more forgiveness as it winds through the elevation change. Both of those rank amid Golf Digest‘s best in the state.
The William Newcomb-designed Moor track is a tree-lined affair cut out of the woods, while The Donald Ross Memorial is something different entirely—a compilation of faithful recreations of some of Ross’ most famous holes (and a few that impacted his thinking).
But the biggest reason to visit Boyne Highlands in 2026 may be what complements those originals. Doon Brae is a creative 9-hole short course carved across a ski slope, compelling golfers to use their imagination. It’s a social-forward addition to the Highlands offerings, and it’s fully lit for play after dark—another example of the growing trend.
Surrounding the golf is on-site lodging, several restaurants and pubs, and an easy living week in welcoming summer weather. You also have easy access to the rest of the northern Michigan golf scene, including sister property Boyne Mountain and all the golf offerings in and around Traverse City. Pure Michigan, indeed.
